Crouching Diamond, Hidden Setting: Creating A Floating Necklace With Separate Pieces

by Eli Schmidt

If you are a jewelry aficionado on a budget, there are times where finding your own materials and getting the piece made will cost less than a pre-made piece. A floating necklace is a timeless piece that you will be able to wear with casual and black tie outfits. A floating necklace can have its own personality and flair that fits your wardrobe and your overall style. If you wish to build your own necklace, here are some pieces that you should look for in a jewelry store

A dainty chain

The trick of a floating necklace is finding a necklace chain that will be toned down and blend in with your skin. The color of the chain that you get should compliment your skin tone and blend into your skin well. If your skin is more ivory or beige, a light chain of silver or white gold can work well. If you have red undertones or if you have a darker pigmentation, a gold or rose gold chain will work well. Be sure that the chain is thin, but can hold the weight of the stone that you are selecting.

Find a stone

The stone is the one place where there are no rules for a floating necklace. You can select a clear diamond or you can go with a colorful stone, such as a ruby or an emerald. The stones can be cut in any way including pear, princess, or round. When you are searching through the jewelry store for a stone, pay special attention to the clarity of the stone. In a floating necklace, the stone will be the only thing that draws the eye. The clarity and having a stone that properly reflects light will give you a high-quality necklace for less.

Get the stone put into a setting

In order to be connected to the chain, the stone will need to be placed into a proper setting. The setting should have handles on the side or should be welded to the necklace in order to be able to hold the stone. The stone will need to be permanently attached to the setting so that the stone cannot fall out. Settings can be taken from rings or other necklaces to be placed inside of your floating necklace project. Be sure that the setting is only attached to the back end of the diamond or other pendant that you select so that the stone appears to be floating on its own.
