Buying Your Girlfriend Jewlery For Her Birthday: 3 Price Points

by Eli Schmidt

It can be very intimidating to buy your girlfriend a piece of jewelry. When you go shopping to buy jewelry, you might not know where to start. It might be difficult to walk into a store without having the proper knowledge of what exactly it is that you're intending to buy. If you go ahead and purchase something without knowing about the item, you might end up not getting exactly what you want, or else spending more than you might like to. It's also confusing and a bit scary to walk into a jewelry store without a good idea about what to look for in a piece of jewelry. So, this article is intended for people who have no idea about jewelry. It's a brief overview of three price points and some salient points about each one.

Budget Jewelry: Subtle Silver

Silver can be really affordable. If you are on a budget, then a really subtle silver necklace can be a beautiful gift. What you want to do is make sure that you're getting silver. Silver color does not mean that the necklace is actual silver. A silver necklace should have a small stamp on it which states the percentage of silver. When you are looking at a jewelers website, make sure to select items which provide a stamp.

Mid Price Point: Gold

Like silver, gold will also come with a stamp which tells you the percentage. There are 12k and 24k gold pieces. You can get a nice gold necklace with a design for your girlfriend. Some gold is colored (white gold) due to other alloys in the mix. Then, there is pure gold. When looking at an item, it's important to make sure you are getting what you pay for. For instance, white gold looks very similar to silver (there is a subtle hue difference visible upon close inspection). The most important thing about gold is that you want make sure you are buying real gold, and not something made of mostly copper (the popular material in "fake gold"). This is the type of material that will often turn skin green.

Extravagant Choice: Diamonds

Buying a diamond is big investment, and therefore it requires a lot of research. You should prepare yourself to learn about the 4 c's of the diamond world. These describe cut, color, clarity, and carat. They are the descriptors that make diamonds so valuable. So, for instance, you might see a really big diamond, but upon close inspection you could see a flaw in the diamond (bad clarity), and therefore it wouldn't be a good pick.
